Every Akarimba trek gives 5% of its profits to Yayasan Kolibri, a small, independently run foundation in Bukit Lawang. Here's what that money actually supports, and who else stands behind it.
What Yayasan Kolibri does
Founded independently in 2018 and based at Rumah Kolibri in Bukit Lawang, the foundation helps children from families who can't afford school, including children without parents or from separated families, stay in education. Sponsors cover transport, uniforms, shoes, school bags, books, and tuition fees until a child finishes school.
Beyond the classroom
At Rumah Kolibri, kids also get English lessons, music and guitar, games, and sport, alongside activities like traditional dance, cooking classes, and river picnics that visitors sometimes join. The goal, in the foundation's own words, is simple: keep children in school, and keep them away from the risks that come with idle time in a tourist area.
The people behind it
Yayasan Kolibri is run locally by Zahara Rita (chair), Mayang Yustapa Sihotang (secretary), Yusuf Sihotang (treasurer), and Fazri Imam Ananda (coordinator), with two local partners, Leuser Tours & Trekking and Yusri Cafe, supporting its activities in the village.
How it connects to a trek with us
Every guest who books a trek or a village activity through Akarimba contributes to this without doing anything extra, since 5% of our profits go directly to the foundation. Guests can also visit Rumah Kolibri directly, bring gently used clothes, books, or school supplies, or ask us about becoming a sponsor.
Curious to see it for yourself? A visit to Rumah Kolibri is one of the village activities we can arrange alongside your trek.
