In the village
Cooking, culture, and Yayasan Kolibri
Beyond the jungle, Bukit Lawang has its own everyday life. These activities are run with Yayasan Kolibri, the local association we already support with 5% of our profits.
What's on offer
Ways to spend time in the village
Each can be booked on its own, or combined into one afternoon. Prices are per person, in Indonesian Rupiah.

Cooking class
Learn to cook traditional dishes with local cooks in Bukit Lawang, cakes and juice included (coconut oil is an extra cost).

Cultural buffet
A buffet of ten traditional dishes, usually accompanied by a local dance performed to keep the tradition alive.

Village tour
A guided walk through Bukit Lawang village with the Yayasan Kolibri team, beyond what you see when passing through on a trek, including how tempeh, tofu, palm sugar, and young coconut drinks are made.

Birthday event
Celebrating a birthday during your trip? The team sets up decorations, a cake, and a dance performance, food and drinks included.

A visit to Rumah Kolibri
Meet the association we already support and see its work up close. If you'd like, you're welcome to bring gently used clothes, books, or school supplies for the children it helps.
Why this partner
Cooking that helps pay for school
Yayasan Kolibri is the same Bukit Lawang association that 5% of our profits already go to: it covers school fees for children whose families can't afford them. These activities are run by the association directly, so booking one supports that work twice over.

Questions about village activities
Can we combine several of these?
Yes. Many guests combine two or three in one afternoon, for example the cooking class, the buffet, and a short visit to Rumah Kolibri. Just tell us what you'd like when you get in touch.
Do you charge a booking fee for this?
No. We simply put you in touch with Yayasan Kolibri directly. You arrange the details and pay the association themselves, at the prices above.
Can this be added to a jungle trek?
Very easily. Most guests add it either the evening before or the day after a trek, while they're already in Bukit Lawang.
What should we bring to Rumah Kolibri?
Nothing is required. If you'd like to bring something, gently used children's clothes, books, or school supplies are always welcome.
