1 day
Day trek1-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang
A taste of the jungle in a single day: wildlife tracking on the way in, tube rafting on the way out.
Booking and cancellation terms
Day by day
The route
Morning: into the park
Depart Bukit Lawang between 8 and 9am with your experienced, licensed guide (plus an assistant guide for groups of 3 or more). A walk into Gunung Leuser National Park, tracking wildlife along the way: orangutans, gibbons, Thomas's langurs, depending on the day.
Midday: deeper on the trail
A picnic lunch in the forest, with more time spent observing wildlife and taking in the viewpoints before turning back toward the river.
Afternoon: tube rafting home
The trek ends the way most routes do: a tube rafting return down the Bohorok river, back into Bukit Lawang by mid to late afternoon.
Good to know: no camping on this route, so you're back in Bukit Lawang the same evening. It's the easiest way to meet the jungle.

Questions about this trek
Can I do this trek solo?
Yes. Our standard treks need a minimum of two people, but a solo traveller can still join for a supplement of IDR 1,450,000 (about €90), which covers the missing spot. A private trek (your group only) is also possible: you pay the price of four people if you are fewer than four, and the price for your actual number if you are four or more. On a standard trek, other travellers may join your group on the same dates.
Will I really see orangutans?
Our guides know the forest and how to read it: a movement in the leaves, a distant call, tracks on the ground. Bukit Lawang is one of the best spots in Sumatra for it, even on a single-day route. Some of the park's orangutans are former rehabilitation-centre residents: fully free today, they remain used to people.
What if it rains during the trek?
The trek goes ahead as planned, rain or shine. This is a rainforest. Rain often means a quieter trail and a more active jungle.
