Day excursion
Tangkahan
Wild, critically endangered Sumatran elephants, tracked on foot with a ranger: watched, never ridden.
Wild, not tamed
This is not elephant riding
The Sumatran elephant is critically endangered: fewer than 1,400 are thought to remain in the wild. As forest gives way to farmland and plantations, elephants increasingly move along the edges where jungle meets cultivated land. In Tangkahan, a park ranger leads the search, reading footprints, feeding signs and broken vegetation to find them. You observe from a respectful distance, with no feeding, no touching, no riding.
The Sumatran elephant is classified as critically endangered, mainly due to habitat loss.
Respectful, at their pace
You move quietly, watch from a distance, and let the elephants set the terms. Their comfort and their space come first, always.
No riding, ever
This excursion is tracking and observation only. We don't offer elephant riding or staged encounters.
Sightings aren't guaranteed
These are wild, free-ranging animals, not kept for tourism. Whether you find them depends on where they've moved that day.
Good to know: elephants are wild ecosystem engineers: as they move through the forest they disperse seeds and shape the landscape for countless other species. Observing them at a distance, without feeding or touching, keeps that behaviour natural.

Questions about this excursion
Is this elephant riding?
No. This is strictly an observation-based excursion: you track wild elephants on foot with a ranger and watch from a respectful distance. We don't offer or support elephant riding.
Are sightings guaranteed?
No. These are wild, free-ranging elephants, not animals kept for tourism. The ranger tracks fresh signs to give you the best possible chance, but nothing can be promised.
Why is the price on request?
Because the format is flexible: the exact logistics depend on your dates, group size, and what else you're combining it with. Ask us and we'll quote you properly.
Can I combine this with a jungle trek?
Yes. Tangkahan runs separately from the orangutan treks, on its own day. Many guests do both during their time in Bukit Lawang.
Is it safe to be near wild elephants?
Yes, when led by a ranger who reads their behaviour and keeps a respectful distance at all times. You'll be told exactly where to stand and when to move back.
Do we visit the hot springs?
Not on the standard day trip. The hot springs are part of the 2-day version, for guests who stay overnight in Tangkahan. Let us know if you'd like to add that when you enquire.
Why motorbike and not a car?
The road to Tangkahan isn't in great condition, and a motorbike handles it far better than a car. Travelling by car is possible if you'd prefer it, but it takes longer. Just let us know when you enquire and we'll arrange it.
Looking for a jungle trek instead?
From a single day to a full crossing of Gunung Leuser.
