Day by day
The route
Into the jungle
Depart Bukit Lawang between 8 and 9am. A steady climb into Gunung Leuser National Park, tracking wildlife along the way. First camp in the late afternoon, with a swim in the river before dinner.
Deeper into the forest
Further into the park, still tracking wildlife, new viewpoints. Second camp, different from the first, with a swim in the river before dinner.
Remote ground
A day reaching quieter, less-visited parts of the park. Third camp of the trip, with a swim in the river before dinner.
Further still
Another day of walking through varied terrain, tracking wildlife and taking in new viewpoints. Fourth and final camp, with a swim in the river before dinner.
Tube rafting back to Bukit Lawang
A morning walk, then the return to Bukit Lawang down the Bohorok river by tube rafting. Arrival back in the village in the early to mid afternoon.
Good to know: this route reaches ground most day-trekkers never see. A reasonable level of fitness matters more here than on the shorter routes.

Questions about this trek
Can I do this trek solo?
Yes. Our standard treks need a minimum of two people, but a solo traveller can still join for a supplement of IDR 1,450,000 (about €90), which covers the missing spot. A private trek (your group only) is also possible: you pay the price of four people if you are fewer than four, and the price for your actual number if you are four or more. On a standard trek, other travellers may join your group on the same dates.
Will I really see orangutans?
Our guides know the forest and how to read it: a movement in the leaves, a distant call, tracks on the ground. Five days gives them real time and ground to track into parts of the park fewer visitors reach. Some of the park's orangutans are former rehabilitation-centre residents: fully free today, they remain used to people.
What if it rains during the trek?
The trek goes ahead as planned, rain or shine. This is a rainforest. Rain often means a quieter trail and a more active jungle.
