Getting a leech, an upset stomach, or just needing paracetamol are all things travellers quietly worry about before a trip. Here's what's actually available in Bukit Lawang, and what isn't.

Pharmacy and clinic in the village

Bukit Lawang has its own pharmacy and a small clinic, enough for common issues and minor injuries. For a proper, modern private hospital, or specialised imaging like an MRI, Medan is where you'd go.

Leeches: more blood than pain

Leeches are common on the trail. On Laura's very first trek, one stayed attached almost an entire day before anyone noticed. It bled a fair amount once removed, but there was no pain at any point. Karan handled it on the spot until the bleeding stopped, no big deal, no detour needed.

Stomach trouble: Sumatra belly

Call it Bali belly, Sumatra belly, or just an upset stomach: it happens sometimes. On one occasion, a course of antibiotics from the Bukit Lawang clinic sorted it out completely. If something ever needs more specific care, scans or tests beyond a general clinic, Medan has that too.

None of this should keep you up at night before your trip. A basic personal first aid kit for small scrapes, plus any regular medication you take, is all you really need to bring.
